Finish Thompson Meets Rigorous Demands of Automotive Industry Plating with Full Line of Pumps

Auto manufacturers demand precision and results. Standards are high, and any company that aims to serve this market must provide reliable, efficient, and cost-effective products and services.

Phillips Plating has been serving the automotive industry since 1974. But more recently, Darin Baratka, President, took their operations to the next level – when he was introduced to Finish Thompson pumps.

“With the previous line of Mag-Drive and mechanical seal pumps on our plating bath filters, we were only getting 9 months to a year before we would have to rebuild them. We had the same problems with AODD pumps in our waste treatment system. We were replacing shaft O rings or air valves on an annual basis. With the increasing cost of parts and maintenance and the unpredictability of pump failure something needed to change,” shared Baratka.

After assessing pump manufacturers, Baratka’s company first purchased a Finish Thompson pump to install on a plating bath filter and an AODD pump for the waste treatment system. After 18 months of trouble-free operation, the initial trial was a success.

Baratka was impressed with the brand’s performance and decided to switch to Finish Thompson pumps for other areas of their operations. They started changing out other filter pumps and AODD pumps to the Finish Thompson brand and they have been mechanically trouble-free ever since. The initial trial pump has been running for eight years and it is still going strong.

In the years since Phillips Plating switched to Finish Thompson Pumps throughout the facility, all the pumps from Mag-Drive to AODD to Drum pumps, they all just run.

“The issues are gone.”

Baratka reports, “I can’t say enough about them. We installed Finish Thompson pumps, and we don’t have to worry about them. We put them in place, and that’s the end of the story. With every application, it’s the same story. For example, we have one Finish Thompson product that pumps wastewater from a plating machine 24/7. We turned it on seven years ago, and we haven’t touched it since.”

The company has turned to Finish Thompson’s drum pumps for other areas of its operations as well. “Some of the harshest things that get pumped, get pumped with Finish Thompson products,” notes Baratka. “We receive plating chemicals, such as nickel sulfate, nickel chloride, and hydrochloric acid, in 55-gallon drums, and we use Finish Thompson drum pumps to transfer these chemicals safely and efficiently.”

Baratka also enjoys Finish Thompson’s quick service and delivery. “I don’t need much service,” he admits, “since not much goes wrong. But when I do need something, I can get it right away. When we installed a new reverse osmosis system, we were able to get two Finish Thompson pumps with quick turnaround. And another time, when I asked for a drum pump, one arrived three days later.”

“My dad started this business 50 years ago,” Baratka notes. “We’re a small, privately owned shop, but we are able to effectively serve the world’s leading auto manufacturers. Finish Thompson has been a huge part of our success.”
