Finish Thompson offers four distinct types of motor designed to support drum and barrel pumps. Click the links below to view our motor selection.
An air motor is a non-electric device powered by compressed air instead of electricity. It's commonly used in hazardous or explosive environments where sparking from electric motors could be dangerous. Air motors are lightweight, easy to control, and provide variable speed and torque by adjusting the air pressure. They are ideal for intermittent or continuous duty and can safely handle flammable, volatile, or corrosive liquids when paired with compatible pump tubes.
FTI explosion-proof motors are electric motors designed for safe operation in hazardous environments where flammable gases, vapors, or dust may be present. Encased in a sealed, rugged housing, it prevents internal sparks or heat from igniting the surrounding atmosphere. These motors meet strict safety standards and when paired with the appropriate pump tube, offer reliable, continuous-duty performance while minimizing risk in volatile work areas.
FTI open-drip proof (ODP) motors are splashproof IP24 variable speed electric motors with ventilation openings that allow air to circulate and cool the motor during operation. These openings are designed to prevent water or debris from dripping directly into the motor at a 15° angle from vertical. ODP motors are best suited for clean, dry environments where there’s minimal exposure to moisture, dust, or corrosive fumes.
FTI totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) motors are IP55 electric motors enclosed in a protective housing that prevents outside air, dust, dirt, and moisture from entering the motor’s internal components. An external fan mounted on the rear of the motor blows air over the housing to dissipate heat and maintain optimal operating temperature. TEFC motors are durable and well-suited for harsh or dirty environments, including industrial settings where exposure to splashes, dust, or non-corrosive contaminants is common.
